Background of the School

Founded in 1999 by a collective of social workers under the Rural Institute for Community Education (RICE), Mathakondapalli Model School (MMS) was established with a singular, non-profit vision: to provide high-quality, non-rote education modeled after best global practices.

MMS provided quality education by restricting class sizes to a maximum of 25 students, ensuring every child received individual attention. This commitment also extended to teacher training and competitive compensation. however, the organization was entirely dependent on student fees and lacked any external revenue.

The Crisis: The Technology Imperative

By 2022, the education world was changing fast due to the technological boom. To ensure their own students remained competitive and aligned with the new skill-based learning policies, MMS had to act immediately. The school decided to transform its learning environment by building six modern facilities.

Mr. Meru Moses led the school’s urgent, but frustrating, search for external funding. The MMS team approached many banks and NBFCs, but despite the school possessing a large, 7.5-acre campus, these institutions failed to understand their core challenge.

We were shopping around for funds… a lot of people came and they saw the campus—they thought we were very rich people.” Traditional lenders failed to understand their non-profit, purpose-driven model.

The Turning Point: Finding a True Partner

When MMS approached Protium for a loan, the experience was markedly different. Protium’s team looked beyond the large campus size and the conventional metrics of a “for-profit” business to see the genuine commitment.

As said by Mr. Meru Moses:

Protium was very friendly. They came and they talked to us, and they have a very good knack to find out whether this party can repay the loan or not. Somehow they found out that we are the genuine party.”

For the leadership at MMS, the funding Protium provided was not a “loan,” but a lifeline and an investment in their mission. “They are not our funders—they are our financial partners in education. Organizations like this, if you want to be society oriented, if you want to help the community, external funds from Protium are the only answer.”

The infusion of capital had an immediate and measurable impact. “Our children developed—what, how can I say—they manufactured a car. From our automobile lab, and that was possible because of the lab, and lab was possible because of Protium.”

The Protium Difference

Mr. Meru Moses provided a strong appreciation towards the way Protium handled the entire loan process, small things that stood them apart from other traditional financiers:

  1. Unified, Client-Centric Focus: There were many Protium team members who were involved in the loan process, but the focus showcased by each one of them, was unified in nature.
  2. Diverse and Flexible Product Portfolio: Mr. Moses also observed that the company offered flexible solutions wherever possible. And saluted the efforts of the leadership for establishing the client-first culture that permeates the entire company.
